Jeffrey R. Sonntag, DO
Dr. Jeffrey R. Sonntag, DO is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery, practicing at OSMC in Granger, IN, Elkhart, IN, Middlebury, IN.
Dr. Sonntag learned an important part of caring for people from his father, a dentist who knew the families behind the appointments. His own curiosity about how things work drew him to orthopedics, and especially the shoulder. He brings both to a visit: an interest in the problem and in the person living with it.
Dr. Sonntag earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Michigan State University, completed orthopedic surgery residency at McLaren Macomb Hospital, and pursued the Rockwood Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship at UT Health San Antonio. Since joining OSMC in 2018, he has served patients with shoulder, hip, and knee conditions across Northern Indiana.

During his Rockwood fellowship, Dr. Sonntag trained with Michael Wirth, Stephen Burkhart, Bernard Morrey, Anil Dutta, and John Hinchey. He also participated in Level I orthopedic trauma call at University Hospital in San Antonio.

Teaching and research experience
His CV lists a clinical instructor appointment in the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, beginning in July 2012.
From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Sonntag participated in research at Michigan State University’s Stress Fracture Clinic, working with cross-country and track student-athletes under Dr. Lynn Brumm. The project investigated osteopathic manipulation and stress fractures in long-distance runners.
His academic work also includes unpublished case reports and a literature review from 2015–2017 addressing shoulder fracture fixation, hip resurfacing complications, and knee biomechanics.
