Pre-Op Information

Prepare for orthopedic surgery with a medication review, fasting instructions, transportation plans, and a practical checklist.

Pre-Op Information content

Your Preoperative Plan

Confirm your procedure, surgical facility, arrival time, and recovery plan with the team. Report allergies, health conditions, sleep apnea, and previous anesthesia problems.

Medications & Supplements

Bring a complete list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Ask for written instructions on what to take, pause, and restart.

  • Do not stop prescribed blood thinners or other medicines on your own.
  • Ask specifically about diabetes and weight-loss medicines, including GLP-1 medicines, and any blood pressure medicines.
  • Tell the anesthesia team about alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other substances.

Eating & Drinking Before Anesthesia

Follow the fasting times supplied by your surgical facility. Solid food and clear liquids may have different cutoff times; a universal midnight rule is not appropriate for everyone. If instructions are missing or you eat or drink after the cutoff, call the team before proceeding.

Travel & Home Preparation

Arrange an adult to drive you home after anesthesia and help as directed. Wear loose clothing and leave valuables at home.

  • Confirm help with meals, bathing, stairs, and transportation.
  • Keep frequently used items within reach and clear walking paths.
  • Bring your medication list, identification, and requested records.
