About this procedure
AC joint reconstruction restores the connection between the collarbone and the shoulder blade after the supporting ligaments are severely torn. Dr. Sonntag repositions the collarbone and reconstructs the ligaments, often using a graft to recreate the stabilizing support, which brings the joint back to its normal alignment and function.
Dr. Sonntag reserves reconstruction for high-grade separations or cases where pain and weakness persist after conservative care. He confirms the severity with an exam and imaging, since most milder separations heal without surgery. When the ligaments cannot recover on their own, rebuilding them restores reliable shoulder mechanics.
