About this procedure

The Latarjet procedure treats shoulder instability caused by bone loss in the socket. Dr. Sonntag transfers a small block of bone, along with its attached tendon, from the shoulder blade to the front of the socket. This deepens the socket and adds a sling effect that helps hold the joint in place.

Dr. Sonntag selects this procedure for patients with recurrent dislocations and meaningful bone loss, where a standard labral repair alone would likely fail. He evaluates the amount of bone loss with detailed imaging, reserving the Latarjet for cases that genuinely need the added bony support it provides.

Recovery

The arm is supported in a sling for several weeks while the transferred bone heals, followed by progressive therapy, with return to full activity generally around four to six months.*
