About this procedure
The lower trapezius transfer, also known as the SALT procedure, treats certain massive rotator cuff tears that cannot be directly repaired. Dr. Sonntag reroutes the lower trapezius muscle, extended with a graft, to take over the work of the missing tendon. This restores active motion and strength to the shoulder.
Dr. Sonntag considers this transfer for younger, active patients with an irreparable tear who still have good joint cartilage and are not candidates for a reverse replacement. He carefully evaluates the tear pattern and overall shoulder health, reserving the procedure for patients well suited to this muscle-restoring approach.
