Planning for Rotator Cuff Repair Recovery content
Healing comes before strength
After rotator cuff repair, the repaired tendon needs time to heal. Rehabilitation commonly progresses from protection in a sling through assisted movement, active movement, and later strengthening. The tear and repair influence when each stage begins.
Get clear instructions for daily tasks
Ask how to dress, bathe, sleep, and manage meals while protecting the arm. Clarify when to wear the sling and which movements are allowed. Do not begin lifting or independent strengthening just because discomfort has eased.
Plan work and activity around your repair
Recovery continues over months, with timing varying by the injury and individual. Discuss the specific tasks your job or sport requires. Ask how therapy progress and healing will be assessed before moving to the next stage.
Common questions
Can I follow a rotator cuff exercise video?
Use only exercises approved for your stage of rehabilitation by your care team. General shoulder fitness exercises are not automatically suitable after a repair.
Does every tear have the same recovery schedule?
No. Ask for the protocol that applies to your repair and any additional procedures performed.
